We didn't start a firm to do things the way they've always been done. We started one to do them the way they should be done.
By Michael Sgroi, Managing Partner · Broadway Advisor Group
There are over 14,000 registered investment advisory firms in the United States. Walk into most of them and you'll find the same thing: a conference room with mahogany furniture, a pitch deck full of pie charts, and a business model that quietly prioritizes the firm's revenue over the client's outcome. We know because we spent years inside that system before deciding to leave it behind.
Broadway Advisor Group was founded on a simple premise: the wealth management industry is broken — not catastrophically, but in quiet, structural ways that compound over decades. Hidden fees erode returns. Cookie-cutter portfolios ignore the nuances of individual tax situations. Advisors rotate through firms, and client relationships become transactions. We built Broadway to be the antidote.
We're an SEC-registered, fee-based fiduciary. That means we don't earn commissions. We don't sell insurance products. We don't get paid by fund companies for shelf space. Our compensation comes directly from the clients we serve — full stop. When we recommend a strategy, the only reason is that we believe it's in your interest.
But fiduciary status alone doesn't make a firm great — it's table stakes. What separates Broadway is the depth of our planning, the transparency of our communication, and the intellectual honesty we bring to every conversation. We'll tell you when the market is overpriced. We'll tell you when your expectations are unrealistic. We'll tell you when the best financial move is to do nothing at all.
"We don't manage money in a vacuum. We manage it in the context of your life — your family, your business, your legacy, your values."
Our office sits at 368 Broadway in downtown Albany — not on Wall Street, not in a glass tower, and not by accident. We chose to build our firm in the Capital Region because this is where we live, where we raise our families, and where we've spent decades building relationships. We know the local tax landscape, the state pension architecture, the healthcare system dynamics, and the business community that makes this region tick.
But our client base extends well beyond the 518. We serve families across the Northeast and beyond — physicians in Manhattan, business owners in Connecticut, retirees who've relocated to the Carolinas but still want an advisor who understands where their wealth was built. Technology has made geography irrelevant for portfolio management, but it hasn't made relationships irrelevant. That's the distinction.
Beyond traditional investment management and financial planning, Broadway offers capabilities rarely available outside institutional wealth managers. Our family office services coordinate across legal, tax, insurance, and estate planning — acting as the quarterback of your financial team. For qualifying clients, we provide access to pre-IPO allocations in transformative private companies — the same opportunities typically reserved for endowments and pension funds.
Every client relationship begins the same way: a conversation. No pitch. No pressure. Just an honest discussion about where you are, where you want to go, and whether we're the right firm to help you get there. Sometimes we're not — and we'll tell you that too.
This blog will be a regular outlet for our thinking — market commentary, planning strategies, firm updates, and the occasional opinion you might not expect from your financial advisor. We believe transparency extends beyond your portfolio statements. It means sharing how we think, what concerns us, and where we see opportunity. We hope you'll follow along.
